We made a painting this weekend! We’ve been wanting a large scale art-piece to go up on our dining room wall. We had a large framed photograph up but, at 26″ x 32″, it didn’t have the right scale for the room. We wanted to go big. Like, 60″ x 36″ big. Now the last time either of us did any painting was in art school. Back then we didn’t enjoy it much, mostly because neither of us were particularly good at it. Undeterred, we gave it a try. Things tend to be more enjoyable when you do it yourself and it turned out to be a lot of fun.
Inspired by color field paintings, I made a sketch in Illustrator and we tried different color combinations til we were happy. Then it was off to the local art store to buy the acrylic paint, the canvas and some 1/4″ painters tape. A few hours later, we were done and it was up on the wall. We’re enjoying it. It’s the bold, large-scale signature piece the room has been waiting for. We call the piece………“Untitled.”

Update: To complete the dining area, we painted a high chair red to add another splash of color to the room. View the post “Red High Chair” for the full room view. Check out the DIY/Make section for more project ideas.
Also, congrats to everyone who has been DIYing there own versions of the Weekend Art Project. You can see a few examples our reader’s handiwork here.

Where can I find 1/4 inch painter’s tape? I live in a very large city but have had no luck finding it. Any suggestions for ordering it online?
We just went to our local hardware store (Canadian Tire) and found it there… Send us a photo of your painting once it’s done! Have fun!!

Great work. I plan on making the same thing, but have a few questions as I’m a bit art illiterate.
1) Is the canvas fabric or a paper of some sort?
2) Did you paint the entire canvas white (or whatever colour you want the lines to show up as) before laying the lines down?
3) When do you peel off the tape; when the paint has totally dried or while its still a bit wet?
Thanks again for the great idea!
Cheers.
Hi Rob, the canvas is canvas fabric stretched over a frame. Just go to an art store and ask for a “pre-stretched canvas” and they’ll help you sort through the different selections they have in stock. Most pre-stretched canvases are already primed white. If you get raw canvas, you’ll have to prime it yourself but chances are your consumer-grade art store stocks pre-primed canvases. We didn’t wait for the paint to dry. If you tacked it down well, the paint shouldn’t bleed through. You can peel it off while wet and still get a crisp line. You can always touch up any bleeding later if required. Hope that helps.

I was just wondering where you got the prestretched canvas from? I can’t seem to find it in the size you have, I also want a large scale design. Any help would be MUCH appreciated! Thank you!
Hi Jenn,
We got our pre stretched canvas from a local art store (Opus). If you go to an art store in your area, I’m sure they will carry pre stretched canvas in all sorts of sizes.
Good luck!

Canvas was on sale at my local craft store and then I had 20% off as well! I couldn’t pass up the opportunity for a total of $14 for the two canvases combined!

Hi Menke, actually, it’s tea :)
[...] We’ve seen bold projects so far, but this one raises the standards in wall art projects, not only by scale but also through the color palette. A splash of color at that scale needs a lot of courage, imagination and of course a bit of artistic sense, because you can ruin so easy not only a piece of canvas, but the entire project, therefore the room’s ambiance as well. I wouldn’t recommend this in a tight space, because it emanates so much energy that needs to be spread. A large dining area like this one would be perfect, because the environment becomes pretty animated when people gather around, and those two different planes converge: the human component and the décor.{found on thenewdomestic}. Has anyone had any luck finding the tape in the united states? ?
Tessa, did you try a paint supply store like Benjamin Moore?
Tessa –
I went to a local art supply store in MN called Dick Blick. I did have a tough time finding the smaller tape though. I went to a couple hardware stores and then wound up calling the craft stores (Michaels, Joannes) and even the paint supply store. I would search for local art supply stores. What caught me up is that they called it Artists Tape, not Painters Tape.
Hope this helps!
Thanks for the info, Scott. You can also try hobby shops as reported here: http://seethatthere.blogspot.ca/2012/03/affordable-art-part-2.html It may also be called pinstripe tape.

I’ve had two goes at this project and BOTH times the paint bled through. I thought the first time was because I didn’t prime the canvas, but the second time around this was on a primed canvas and I smoothed the tape down very well to try and avoid problems the second time around. Still had the same issue. I’m using blue painter’s tape. Any idea what could be going wrong? The canvases aren’t high end, but I wouldn’t think that would make the difference. Any help/advice is appreciated. Thanks!
Hi Amanda – thanks for the comment and for giving this a try twice! Mmm… I really don’t know why the paint bled through. We didn’t have any problems with that at all. What type of paint did you use? We used acrylic paint. Perhaps the paint you used was too watery?
Hi, I’m really amazed in this art. I want to do this but i don’t the materials needed. Can you please name all the materials that i should buy?
(1) Stretched canvas. (2) Painter’s tape. (3) Acrylic paint. And a brush if you don’t already have one.
